Overview
The Life Palace is the core of the Zi Wei Dou Shu chart, representing a person's innate structure, personality traits, and overall life direction. The classics say "the Life Palace is the master of the person" — reading a chart starts with the Life Palace, whose major star sets the basic tone of a life. The Life Palace is determined by birth month and hour, paired with the Body Palace. The Life Palace shows the "innate" while the Body Palace shows the "acquired" — generally, after age 35 the Body Palace's influence gradually strengthens. A Life Palace must never be read alone: the San Fang Si Zheng (Wealth, Career, and Travel palaces) must be consulted together to judge the overall structure.
How to find it
The Life Palace is determined by birth month and hour: start from the Yin palace for the first month, count forward to the birth month, then count backward from that palace for the Zi hour to the birth hour — the palace where it lands is the Life Palace. How to judge
The Life Palace favors bright, well-aspected stars and fears fallen, afflicted ones. A bright major star with Zuo Fu, You Bi, Wen Chang, and Wen Ku gathering means high structure and great achievement; fallen with fierce stars means limited structure and more toil than result. But a Life Palace without a major star (empty palace) is not a bad fate — the opposite palace's major star can be borrowed.

When the Life Palace has no major star, borrow the major star of the opposite palace (Travel Palace). The classics say "a Life Palace without proper stars can still use the stars of the opposite palace" — such people are easily influenced by their environment and often do well leaving their hometown.
