Zi Wei Dou Shu, also written Ziwei Doushu or abbreviated ZWDS, is often called Purple Star Astrology in English. This traditional Chinese natal-chart system organizes a birth chart into 12 life areas and uses symbolic stars to describe recurring styles of thinking, relating, working, and making decisions.

If you know Western astrology, the chart may feel familiar at first: Palaces are somewhat house-like life areas, while Major Stars are easier to learn as archetypal characters. The systems are not equivalent, though — Zi Wei Dou Shu has its own timing methods, star relationships, and interpretive rules.

What is Zi Wei Dou Shu?

Zi Wei Dou Shu — often introduced in English as Chinese Purple Star Astrology — is a traditional Chinese natal-chart system. Think of the chart as a symbolic map of life: 12 Palaces describe different life areas, while the Major Stars describe the styles, drives, and archetypal roles that show up inside those areas.

If you know Western astrology, the Palaces can feel a little like houses and the Major Stars can feel a little like archetypal characters. That comparison is only a learning aid: Zi Wei Dou Shu has its own logic, timing system, star relationships, and technical rules, so there is no one-to-one match with Western planets, signs, or houses.

A Western-friendly way to read a Zi Wei chart

12 Palaces = 12 life areas

Start with the question you are asking. Identity, partnership, money, career, home, wellbeing, family, and social networks each have their own Palace.

14 Major Stars = 14 archetypal operating styles

A Major Star is easier to learn as a character: executive, strategist, operator, caretaker, networker, mediator, mentor, commander, reformer, and so on.

Star in a Palace = an archetype in context

A strategist archetype in the Career Palace describes a different pattern from that same strategist archetype in the Partnership Palace. The Star tells you how; the Palace tells you where.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Zi Wei Dou Shu the same as Western astrology?▾

No. Both use a birth chart and symbolic interpretation, so some learning analogies are useful, but Zi Wei Dou Shu has its own 12 Palaces, star system, Four Transformations, strength states, and timing methods. There is no one-to-one conversion between Zi Wei stars and Western planets or between Zi Wei Palaces and Western houses.

What information do I need?▾

Your birth date, birth time, and gender. If you know the recorded birth time to the minute, use it. True solar time is an optional traditional correction used by some Zi Wei Dou Shu schools when determining the birth hour.

What's included in the free chart?▾

The free chart includes the complete star map across twelve palaces, a brief Life Palace reading, and a free AI summary. The full in-depth reading can be unlocked once or via subscription.

What is true solar time?▾

True solar time adjusts clock time for the Sun’s apparent position at the birthplace, including longitude-related differences from standard time. Some Zi Wei Dou Shu schools use this correction when determining the birth hour; it is a traditional chart-calculation convention, not a guarantee of a more accurate reading.
